Reggie Wayne was born on November 17, 1978 in New Orleans, Louisiana, and attended high school at John Ehret high, just outside of New Orleans in Marrero, Louisiana. Wayne was an incredible two-sport athlete in high school, in both football and track. He excelled at football especially, and was a two-time All-State honoree, pulling in an impressive 930 yards and 10 touchdowns in his senior year.
Reggie Wayne chose to attend the University of Miami, where he was a four year starter and played alongside of two other big named future NFL receivers, Andre Johnson and Santana Moss. His college career kicked off with 48 receptions as a freshman, which broken the school record. Wayne had an impressive four years at Miami, pulling in at least one reception in 36 straight games, and setting the school record for total career catches at 173. He became one of only four Miami wide receivers in history to pull in 20 or more touchdowns in their career, putting him alongside names like Michael Irvin, Leonard Hankerson, and Lamar Thomas. While Wayne then moved on to the NFL in 2001, he was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame on March 24, 2011.
Wayne then went into the 2001 NFL Draft, and was drafted in the 1st round, with the 30th overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts. His first year he spent a good amount of time learning behind wide receiver Marvin Harrison, and he posted 27 receptions for 345 yards and 0 touchdowns. His second year was when Wayne really started to come on strong. Wayne’s yards doubled in year two, and he finished with 49 receptions, 716 yards, and 4 touchdowns to finish the year.
It was in 2003 when Wayne finally got the opportunity to be a full-time starter, and he took advantage of the opportunity posting a solid 68 receptions, 838 yards, and 7 touchdowns. Wayne’s stat line continued to get better and better as the years rolled on, and he hauled in 77 catches, 1,210 yards, and 12 touchdowns in 2004. It was clear at this point that Wayne and quarterback Peyton Manning had a strong connection on the field. Wayne was named “Wild Card Weekend Offensive Player of the Week” in 2004, as the Colts took down the Broncos in the playoffs.
2006 was a big year for Reggie Wayne as he signed a six year, $39.5 million contract extension, and also was selected to his first Pro Bowl. This was also the year that he won his first Super Bowl ring, hauling in a 53 yard touchdown to help his Colts beat the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI. Wayne followed up the impressive 2006 season with an even better 2007 season, bringing in 104 receptions, for 1,510 yards, sending him to his second consecutive Pro Bowl. Overall, Wayne has made the NFL Pro Bowl five times in a row from 2006 to 2010.
