Indianapolis Colts Week in Review for 9/5
The week of September 5th was one that ended up being very interesting for many teams, and was also the final week leading up to the kickoff of the 2011 NFL season. The Indianapolis Colts were the talk of the NFL this past week for a few different reasons, and they head into the opening week of the season with quite a few questions about the team; but also with a few questions that finally have an final answer. We’ll take a look at some of the top stories of the week in the Indianapolis Colts week in review for September 5th.
Peyton Manning Has Second Surgery
This was one of the biggest stories out there, and one that sent a shock wave through Indianapolis Colts nation. With this second surgery for Manning, this means that he will miss at least 2-3 months, and could be out longer than that possibly. The team was hoping that he would be able to play by the 2nd or 3rd game in a worst case scenario, but the recovery process on his neck surgery didn’t go to plan, and he decided to have a second surgery in the end. The Colts will miss Manning, but you can bet that he’ll be the biggest coach and cheerleader on the sidelines.
Kerry Collins to Start
This story goes right along with the one above, as the Colts decided to go with a veteran quarterback in Kerry Collins to replace Manning. The Colts original plan was to go with whoever won the back-up quarterback battle between Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky, but the front office didn’t feel that those two would be able to lead the team if Peyton missed time. Orlovsky was then cut, and Painter will be the back-up to Collins in the end.
Jim Tressel Joins Colts
This one was quite a shocking bit of news, as the Colts decided to hire ex- Ohio State coach Jim Tressel as a game day consultant. One of the issues that came with this was if he would be forced to wait any amount of time to start with the team (similar to Terrelle Pryor’s suspension). In the end, Coach Tressel and Jim Irsay decided that it would be best for him to begin working with the team in the seventh game of the season. The addition of an excellent coach like Tressel in any fashion is a great move, and he should be a big help for the Colts organization in general.
